Planting day - potatoes and carrots

Image
This morning we made a ditch in the bed we had prepared for potatoes and planted them, then we put some carrots in other beds that had some space.  We also fenced the potato bed and fixed up some fencing that hadn't weathered well. We had a good turnout and some new faces, as always the little ones were keen to get their hands dirty and all got to plant a potato or two. The reason the potatoes were planted in a ditch is that we need lots of soil between the seed potato and the surface, so there is room for potatoes to grow.  After the seed potatoes sprout and show themselves we will fill soil in underneath the leaves to put the stem underground, which stimulates it to sprout potatoes.  We will keep doing this as the plant grows until hopefully we end up with a mound instead of a ditch, chockers with spuds :)

Ready to plant some potatoes!

This morning we were busy at the garden fixing things and preparing a garden bed for planting potatoes.  We are thinking of planting Sunday October 11th at 10am... As always some little helpers came along and did a great job! We fixed some fences and made a bamboo trellis for the tomatoes and peas to climb and transplanted a few things that were grouping well to another garden where they had some more space. The Sunday after next (October 11th) we are planning to meet again to make some more fences and plant some root vegetables :)

Working Bee, Sunday 20th September, 10am

OK so it's on again!  We plan to work another bed - thinking root vegetables this time - and have a couple of odd jobs to do, so we are calling a working bee this Sunday (September 20th, 10am) to: Improve the soil in another bed.  Or two.  If you have worm castings, compost or manure, feel free to bring it along.  And something to dig it in with. Make something for the climbing plants (tomatoes and beans) to climb.  We are thinking of making something clever using bamboo!  So if you have access to bamboo feel free to bring some along  Fix the fences we put up a few weeks ago, they need extra stakes for stability.  We will also start on new fences for the new bed.  Spare garden stakes welcome. All welcome, hope to see you there!

Sunflowers germinating!

The sunflowers are starting to pop up now!  Here are some of the first ones out

Spring planting!

Image
So yesterday was Spring planting, a bunch of us got together with heaps of different herbs, some tomatoes, beans and chili and capsicum, and sunflowers.  We put some fences up too to help protect the seedlings. Next we need to think about watering!  We are planning to water every day, at least, while everything is small.  If you would like to help out then put your name next to a day of the week, for the coming week or as a regular thing, on this spreadsheet .

Planting August 30th, 10 AM - bring some seeds or plants!

OK we are good to go .  Let's meet Sunday 30th August 10 AM to plant for Spring!  All welcome, feel free to bring something you would like to plant. We are thinking seeds or seedlings, of  vegetables or herbs  to share. We will also put in some small fencing on the day to help keep out balls, feet and paws.

Soil prep

Today we choose a bed and prepared it for Spring planting.  We pooled resources and brought along what we had in terms of manure and worm farm spoils - it was great to see some little people getting involved :) Next step is putting up some fencing to discourage pets, balls and other tramplers, and planting some seeds, coming August 30th!
