Planting day - potatoes and carrots
This morning we made a ditch in the bed we had prepared for potatoes and planted them, then we put some carrots in other beds that had some space. We also fenced the potato bed and fixed up some fencing that hadn't weathered well.
We had a good turnout and some new faces, as always the little ones were keen to get their hands dirty and all got to plant a potato or two.
The reason the potatoes were planted in a ditch is that we need lots of soil between the seed potato and the surface, so there is room for potatoes to grow. After the seed potatoes sprout and show themselves we will fill soil in underneath the leaves to put the stem underground, which stimulates it to sprout potatoes. We will keep doing this as the plant grows until hopefully we end up with a mound instead of a ditch, chockers with spuds :)
