Chelsea St Garden - the plan
So we would like to use the raised beds at Chelsea St playground for a communal community garden. We had a meeting on August 2nd where we decided:
- To start a communal garden in the raised beds - something everyone can get involved in and help plant in, and share the spoils of. If someone wants to request their own personal allotment that's cool but our working assumption is that it will be all communal and we will work out planting/maintenance at periodic meetings which all are welcome to.
- To apply for Council approval to have this recognised as a community garden. This process could take as long as a year.
- In the meantime to go guerrilla and start working a bed anyway so we can plant Spring 2020.
This is a community endeavour and anyone who wants to get involved is more than welcome to. All planning meetings and gardening activities are public and all are welcome to get involved. They will be advertised in the garden, and updates will be communicated here, to keep everyone in the loop.
- It means that if we maintain the garden the Council Maintenance team will not mess with it (which has actually happened in the past)
- Provides access to Council resources and funding (potentially including communal compost bin, shed, tools, hose, manure, plants).
- A contact point for Council before they action anything affecting the garden
Applying to Council will however be a fair bit of work, importantly, it requires a list of 20 local supporters and a committee of at least six. If you are happy to be either please write to ChelseaStGarden@gmail.com to let us know.
